I guess that's the question that is going through everyone's head. Well, for me too. I'm 16 and waiting for my O level results. There were several rumours stating that the results will be out on 10th January. But I'm not too sure myself! Visited Temasek Polytechnic on the 5th of January and well, after attending the open house, I'm kind of like sucked in. But then again, I would've to think rationally. Everything actually just boils down to the word 'Results'
I mean like, matter of fact, if your results are bad, even if you wanna go JC, it is also kind of impossible if you get 21 & above. But the dilemma comes when your results are not good, yet too bad either. You're stuck in the middle, wondering which path to take. That's when panic, confusion and all the emotions start setting in. Well, if there are people who would like to seek more opinions on the various lives in poly and JC, you could google 'JC or poly' & many forums such as the SG forums would pop out. Sought out the different opinions given.
Most of the times, poly students would encourage you to go poly. However, JC students would encourage you to go JC. It's very subjective and well, the final decision still falls in your hands. I'd try & name out the pros and cons of poly and JC life below, but it's based on my own opinions and all. So yup. Here goes!
Pros of Poly:
1. Do not need to wear a uniform, not restricted, more freedom
2. Food seems to be much better there due to the multifarious restaurants etc.
3. School life MIGHT be more relaxed as there are no fixed school hours
4. Do not need to go through rigid school hours
5. More freedom given to students.
6. Diploma would be perfect for people who would want to join the workforce ASAP
Cons of poly:
1. Might be troublesome to think of what to wear everyday.
2. Life would suck if you are admitted into a course you dislike.
3.Student has to be more self disciplined as only top 5% admitted into local universities!
4.Student might get complacent and not study
5. Important to maintain constant GPA as almost everything is counted into your GPA
6. Local universities tend to be more merit orientated
7. Fare prices for taking public transport would be higher.
Pros of JC:
1. Easier entry into local universities
2. Similar to secondary school life so not much difference
3.Knowledge is kind of spoon-fed to students
4.Student fare for taking public transport still!
Cons of JC:
1. Life might be more monotone
2. Need to wear school uniform everyday
3.Only one major exams & if you screw that, you're dead.
4. Cannot dye hair HAHA
5. Would tend to be more stress as it's important to secure a place in the universities.
Okay, so that's all I can think of. My 2 cents ~ But anyway, personally, I feel that the JC route is more suitable for people who are still not very sure of where their passion lies and what career they want to pursue. However, the poly route is more suitable for people who already have a goal and are VERY sure of what careers they want to pursue. And of course, the most important thing is to make sure your interest and passion still stays till the end of poly life, or you'll find studying the course a total chore.
Okay, I hope some of you have a better idea of the JC and poly route ( I hope ) Or if you're still confused, write out the pros and cons of poly and JC, based on your own opinions and decide. It's easier when you have everything listed out!
Another option is discuss things with your parents and see if they would want you to pursue the JC or poly route. After all, our parents are still older and have seen much more of the world than we had.
Another alternative is to write out on a large paper, starting with captions like 'If i get 12 points, which poly course am i eligible for? Which JC am I eligible for?' And continue with the list maybe until 25? As the saying goes, ' Hope for the best, Prepare for the worst' ( This alternative was suggested by Annabel Fung! All the best to students waiting for their O level results! I hope this blog post helped :)
